Blurb: We were meant to be seductive. We were designed to lure humans in.
Fortuna Sworn is the last of her kind.
Her brother disappeared two years ago, leaving her with no family or species to speak of. She hides among humans, spending her days working at a bar and her nights searching for him. The bleak pattern goes on and on… until she catches the eye of a powerful faerie.
He makes no attempt to hide that he desires Fortuna. And in exchange for her, he offers something irresistible. So Fortuna reluctantly leaves her safe existence behind to step back into a world of creatures and power.
It soon becomes clear that she may not have bargained with her heart, but her very life.
Fortuna Sworn is an immersive fantasy action/romance which completely hooked me from the first few words.
Alongside the more familiar werewolves, vampires and fae (all reimagined for her own unique universe) K.J. Sutton has created a new race – Nightmares – and Fortuna may be the last one alive.
The story begins with her kidnapped, but it doesn’t take her long to show that she is no damsel in distress, as the power of using people’s fears against them can get her out of most tricky situations. What it cannot do is tell her what happened to her missing brother but, luckily for Fortuna, there happens to be a faerie around who has information about the disappearance. Unluckily for Fortuna, he wants something in return… her!
Still, family is family, so Fortuna immediately plunges into action, adventure and political intrigue in the Fae Courts with just one aim in mind – finding her brother, or finding out what happened to him. It might just cost her everything.
There is an interesting twist on the romantic fantasy tropes here, as by the end of the novel there are least three potential romantic interests vying for our hero’s affections. Each has something different to offer, and I genuinely have no idea who she will choose (or who I would!), which adds an extra level of tension to the already high stakes of danger to life, limb and loved ones.
I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and worldbuilding here and was loathe to leave the plot and characters at the – cliffhanger – ending, so am thrilled that there is more to come! Book 2, Restless Slumber releases on 4th February and I will definitely be grabbing a copy to find out what happens next. I recommend fellow fans of fae-related fantasy romance do likewise!
My captors thought I was a werewolf or a faerie, both of which would fetch a high price. Some buyers would pay even more if they intended to kill the creature and sell its parts. It was well-known that the muscles of a werewolf gave you unparalleled strength. The hands of a faerie lent you their magic. The lungs of a nymph brought the ability to breathe underwater.
The heart of my kind would eliminate all the eater’s fears.
