Blurb: “Is it too late to tell him you love him when you are looking down the barrel of his gun?”
An English debutante transforms from Miss-Perfectly-Correct to criminally insane as she breaks the bonds of her rigid upbringing. Sheriff Hank Gephart tries to reel her in – but she’s out of control and she’s not hitting the brakes.
What happened to the genteel lady in twin-set and pearls? And why did she shoot Mr Right?
Brake Failure is set in 1999 in the months leading up to Y2K “meltdown” when the US government was spending $150 billion preparing for Armageddon, As Lionel Shriver says in her novel, We Have To Talk About Kevin: “1999, a year widely mooted beforehand as the end of the world.”
It took me a little time to get the hang of this book, as I initially found the time jumps from Ruby’s past (from her own perspective) to the present (in which we mostly get the perspective of the captain of the local law enforcement).
However, once Ruby begins to find her feet in the US, so the reader also begins to warm to her and as the past events are slowly filled in, the present situation gradually makes more and more sense.
Once I was a few chapters in, I was totally hooked. Ruby is so endearing as she she sheds her inhibitions and begins trusting her gut and following her heart – she really grew on me. The cast of characters she meets after her move to America are funny and full of heart, making the perfect supporting romcom cast.
The plot is all about learning to let go, rebel and act on impulse; learning lessons about love, sex and friendship along the way. Oh, and annoying local law enforcement for very little reason!
I really enjoyed following Ruby in her slowly unfolding love affair with Kansas, herself and her eventual Mr Right. I would recommend this one to romcom and chicklit fans looking for a fun, easy read.
Ruby blinked. Manure? How can I possibly compete, she thought wildly, when Claire has opera divas sipping champagne and I have faeces-throwing in Carbondale Scranton?
