12 Days of Clink Street Blog Tour: The Dog Ate My Homework – Aaron James

This book contains five illustrated poems on familiar childhood themes: homework, trainers, school dinners, sports day and the first day of school.

Minishine’s Thoughts: This was really good. Can we read it again please? [we actually ended up reading the book three times through before she was satisfied]. I like the school dinner poem best because I like school dinners too. And the dog one was funny. I really liked all of the pictures because they were all colourful and smiley!

Mr Shine and I thought this was a nice little poetry book for children, as it dealt with themes they would relate to and identify with. This was certainly true for Minishine who proceeded to carry it around to school and activity groups to share with her friends!

We were a little disconcerted that the poems didn’t always keep the same rhyming pattern or rhythm, which threw us as we read them aloud. Minishine also noted that it didn’t always have the same sounds and rhyming words but she clearly didn’t care about this, perhaps because she is not as used to language patterns as adults would be?

This is a cute little book for bedtime reading together and Minishine was fascinated by the subjects covered, so I would recommend for little ones 3-5-ish.

Every day, it’s something new,
Dinner lady says, “It’s all for you”,
We stand in the queue, I’m at the front,
It’s my favourite today, just my luck!
