Blurb: Josie James is an ordinary 13 year old until something extraordinary happens during her summer holidays.
Whilst staying at her Great Grandmother’s cottage in the country she finds herself swept into the cursed world of Suncroft where it is perpetual winter.
Her new friends believe she could be the Chosen One who it is foretold will lift the curse, but there are more pressing matters.
The Teardrops of Summer – magical crystals that render the owner immortal – have been stolen. Along with her telepathic husky-dog Protector Asher and her new friends, Josie must race to find the Teardrops and prevent catastrophe for their world.
Josie James and the Teardrops of Summer is a children’s (Middle Grade) book, but makes for brilliant reading for adults too!
The plot is fascinating, starting with Josie’s introduction to magic, elves and another world and dealing with the problem of the missing Teardrops, whilst only setting the ball rolling on the bigger story of the cursed Suncroft and the Chosen One who is destined to reverse the curse.
I was totally and utterly hooked!
Josie is a fantastic character: strong, curious and quick to piece clues together. I already love Asher (her telepathic dog-Protector), even though he really only makes a couple of cameos here, and there are clearly still plenty of secrets to uncover from her new friends and acquaintances. I particularly want to know more about the mysterious healers who ‘help’ the Elders rule.
The writing is smooth and immersive, and I loved the colourful descriptions. The ‘chocolate box’ settings described gave me a real feeling of old-timey warmth and nostalgia which fitted perfectly with the characters and storyline.
Highly recommend this for all readers from age 7 or so upwards, boy or girl, who enjoy fantasy adventures packed with intrigue and magic. If you’re anything like me, you will be thrilled to hear that book 2 is on its way, and book 3 is already underway… I’ll keep you posted!
Josie saw her nan sitting on one of the benches by the rose arbour talking to someone. Leaning out of the window slightly, she could hear her voice, but was too far away to hear what she was saying. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw what looked like a pair of green eyes staring at her through the roses. She blinked in disbelief and when she looked back, they were gone.
